DoT Driving Test (WA) — 2025 Guide
The Department of Transport (DoT) on-road driving test—also known as the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA)—is a ~45-minute drive in normal WA traffic that checks you can control the car smoothly, follow road rules, fit safely into traffic, and detect/respond to hazards. You'll drive in normal traffic conditions and be asked to complete set manoeuvres—typically a park (e.g., reverse or parallel) and/or a three-point turn.
Eligibility, Booking & Fees (WA)
If you’re under 25, you generally need 50 supervised hours, including five at night; those 25 or older are usually exempt from logbook hours. You book, change, or cancel through DoTDirect, and standard resit fees apply if you need another attempt.
Tip: Book early—and if you need to change, do it at least 2 full business days beforehand to avoid forfeiting fees.
Vehicle Requirements
Arrive in a safe, roadworthy car with working lights, indicators, horn, wipers, and handbrake, a clean windscreen, and good tyres. Learners must display L plates en route. Remove anything that blocks your view and set your seat and mirrors so you can demonstrate full control and clear observation.
What to Bring on Test Day
- Valid ID and your learner’s permit
- Glasses/contacts if required
- Logbook or verified digital hours (if under 25)
- Booking confirmation (if applicable)
Assessment Criteria
Examiners look for a steady observation routine (mirrors and head checks), timely and correct signalling, appropriate speed for the limit and conditions, accurate lane positioning, smooth vehicle control, sound gap selection, and early hazard awareness with calm, safe responses.
