To obtain a learner permit in Victoria, you must pass the computer-based knowledge test, which checks your understanding of road rules and safe driving practices. The booking process is available online through VicRoads.

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner permit in Victoria.

If you are under 21, you’ll need to complete 120 hours of supervised driving, including at least 20 hours at night. These must be properly recorded in your logbook before you can book your test.

This is a video-based test that measures your decision-making skills in traffic. You’ll be shown road situations and asked to identify the safest time to act. Practice resources are available on the VIC Hazard Perception Test page.

After holding your learner permit for at least 12 months and completing your logbook hours, you can sit the Hazard Perception Test followed by the practical driving test. Passing both will qualify you for your probationary licence.

Temporary visitors can use their overseas licence in Victoria. Permanent residents, however, must convert their overseas licence to a Victorian licence within six months of becoming a resident.

Licence renewals can be completed online through myVicRoads or by visiting a VicRoads office. You can generally renew your licence for either 3 or 10 years.

If you fail, you’ll need to book another attempt after the required waiting period. Additional fees will apply for each re-test.
