What a rider is asked that a car driver is not
A rider faces questions a car driver never sees. Lane position and the buffer come first — where you sit in the lane to be seen and to leave yourself an escape path. Filtering and lane-splitting rules are set by Transport for NSW, so learn them exactly as the authority states them rather than from habit. Protective gear is tested: what to wear and why it matters when there is no cage around you. Technique questions cover counter-steering, braking mid-corner and reading surface hazards — gravel, tram tracks, painted lines and wet metal all behave differently under two wheels than four. You are also tested on being seen at intersections, and on the pillion and load rules that govern carrying a passenger or gear. After the knowledge test
Passing the knowledge test is one step on the rider ladder Transport for NSW sets out — the pre-learner rider course and the licence stages that follow it. Complete each in the order and on the terms the authority names; confirm the current steps on its rider licence pages rather than relying on anything secondhand. Where the Hazard Perception Test applies, it is 15 videos, $58 each attempt, with unlimited attempts and a pass valid for 15 months through to the Driving Test — all per Transport for NSW.
