South Australia’s HPT evaluates how well you can spot hazards and make safe driving decisions. Through video scenarios, you’ll tap when safe actions—like slowing, overtaking, or turning—are possible. Correctly timed taps earn points, while risky or poorly judged ones lower your score. Passing the HPT is a key step before your driving test. Practise the SA Hazard Perception Test clips to prepare and build confidence.

FAQs

The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) in South Australia is a computer-based assessment made up of 15 short video clips filmed from a driver’s perspective. Each clip shows everyday traffic situations such as merging cars, intersections, pedestrians crossing, or vehicles slowing down. Your job is to decide the safest response—either by clicking when it’s safe to act (slow, turn, overtake) or by choosing to hold back. The test checks whether you can identify developing risks early and avoid dangerous decisions.

You must pass the Hazard Perception Test before you can upgrade from your learner’s licence (L’s) to your P1 provisional licence. This step ensures you can demonstrate safe judgement on the road before being allowed to drive unsupervised. Many learners attempt the HPT once they have enough real driving practice and feel confident handling traffic.

The test fee is around $35, payable when booking through Service SA. Payment is usually made by debit or credit card. Keep in mind that if you fail and need to retake the test, you’ll need to pay the fee again. Fees are updated from time to time, so it’s best to confirm the latest price on the Service SA website before booking.

Unlike some other states, the SA HPT is not available online. It must be completed in person at a Service SA customer centre. During the test, you’ll be seated at a computer where the video clips will play, and you’ll respond using the mouse. It’s a supervised environment to ensure fairness and security.

To pass, you must respond correctly in at least 11 out of the 15 clips. Correct responses depend on both your timing and judgement. Clicking too early, too late, or unnecessarily will count against you. Sometimes, the safest response is to do nothing at all—so learning when not to act is just as important as knowing when to act.

Yes. If you can’t attend your appointment, you can reschedule through Service SA. However, if you cancel, your fee may not be refunded. It’s best to make changes well in advance of your test date. For rescheduling, you’ll need your booking reference number and identification details.

If you fail, you must rebook the test for another day and pay the fee again. There’s no cap on the number of attempts you can make, but repeated failures can slow down your licence progress. Reviewing official practice materials before retrying is highly recommended, as these help you learn how the system scores safe responses.
