DIT Driving Test (SA) — 2025 Guide
South Australia uses two pathways: CBT&A (logbook with an accredited instructor) or a one-off on-road exam called VORT with an Authorised Examiner. The on-road assessment confirms you can plan, obey SA road rules, manage space and speed, and respond early to developing hazards. Expect normal traffic driving plus set manoeuvres appropriate to the route.
Eligibility, Booking & Fees (SA)
To be test-ready you must meet SA learner requirements (including the Hazard Perception Test and any required logbook hours, depending on your pathway). VORT bookings are made directly with an Authorised Examiner; CBT&A sign-offs occur through your instructor. Fees vary by examiner/provider, and resits incur another fee; give sufficient notice if you need to change a booking.
Vehicle Requirements
Use a safe, roadworthy car: all lights/indicators, horn, wipers and handbrake must operate correctly; windscreen clear; tyres in good condition. Learners must display L-plates when travelling to the test. Clear the dash/windscreen, and adjust seat and mirrors so you can maintain consistent observation and control.
What to Bring on Test Day
-
Photo ID and learner’s permit
-
Glasses/contacts if you’re endorsed to drive with them
-
Logbook/CBT&A paperwork or VORT booking details
-
Any vehicle documents your examiner requests
Assessment Criteria
Examiners assess whether you: keep an effective mirror/head-check routine; signal clearly and in time; choose speeds suited to limits and conditions; hold a stable lane position; select safe gaps; and manage hazards early and smoothly so other road users aren’t forced to react.
Immediate Fail Items
-
Actions that create danger or require examiner intervention
-
Disobeying STOP/red, failing to give way, or unsafe merges/turns
-
Missing required head checks that lead to risk
-
Exceeding the speed limit or losing control (e.g., kerb strike during a manoeuvre)
After the Test
Pass (VORT or CBT&A): your examiner/instructor records the result; complete the admin steps to move onto P-plates under SA’s graduated licensing.
Not yet competent: you’ll get feedback on what to fix and can book another attempt; standard fees and notice periods apply.
