What the NSW DKT Prep Course Covers
The NSW Driver Knowledge Test has 45 questions split into 15 general knowledge and 30 road safety, and Transport for NSW requires 12 of 15 general knowledge AND 29 of 30 road safety to pass — hitting 41 of 45 overall is not enough if either section falls short. The prep course is structured around these two thresholds so you drill the road safety section hardest, where the margin is tightest.
How to Prepare for the NSW DKT and Pass First Time
Preparing for the NSW DKT works best in a fixed order: learn the road rules, then test yourself under the real pass mark, then review only what you get wrong. Because Transport for NSW ends the test at 2 wrong in road safety, that section carries no room for guessing — the course weights your study time toward it.
- 1
Study the official handbook
Work through the Road Users' Handbook from Transport for NSW — the source every DKT question is drawn from.
- 2
Practise free first
Run unlimited free DKT questions before you pay for anything — session practice is where the road-safety margin gets built.
- 3
Test at the real pass mark
Score yourself against 12 of 15 and 29 of 30 separately, not just 41 of 45 overall.
- 4
Review your wrong answers
Re-drill only the topics you failed, focusing on road-safety items where you can afford just one miss.
- 5
Book when you consistently pass both sections
Book the DKT with Service NSW only after you clear both minimums repeatedly.
NSW DKT Cost, Format and What Happens If You Fail
The in-person NSW DKT costs $58 each attempt, while the online DKT is $58 as one fee with unlimited attempts, per Transport for NSW. The online version is a self-paced 4–6 hour interactive course with a final test, and you must be 16 or older to sit the in-person test (online enrolment opens at 15 years and 11 months). If you fail the online final test, Service NSW requires a 12-hour wait before you retake it. Failing once is not the end. The online DKT lets you retake after a 12-hour wait under one $58 fee, so a first-time fail costs you time, not more money — practise the road-safety section again and re-sit.
Practise the NSW DKT Free Before You Buy the Course
Free unlimited practice is the right first step — work through NSW DKT questions at your own pace and only move to the paid course once you know which topics still trip you up. Our free NSW learner practice test lets you rehearse the general-knowledge and road-safety format without signing up. When you are ready for a structured, exam-cycle study plan that drills both section minimums, the prep course bundle takes over.
